National Autism Awareness Month raises public awareness about autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) during the month of April. One of the many ways support is shown worldwide is through the Light it Up Blue campaign, initiated by the United Nations and nonprofit organization, Autism Speaks. Each year on April 2, buildings around the world illuminate a blue light and communities come together to pledge their support.

ASD is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Individuals with ASD often struggle with social interactions and have restricted or repetitive behaviors and interests. Recognizing the signs and symptoms is critical. Screening and diagnosing children as early as possible will help ensure they receive the proper support and services and avoid significant developmental delays.

According to the Center for Disease Control, currently about 1 in every 36 children and over 5 million adults are diagnosed with Autism or an Autism-related disorder in the United States. This increased from 2020, when the estimate was 1 in 44 children. Autism Speaks attributes part of the increase in diagnoses to an increase in awareness of Autism symptoms and early screenings.

Autism Awareness Month also encompasses acceptance and inclusion. Acceptance and inclusion can be demonstrated in many ways and includes having access to education, health care, and services so that individuals with ASD may live and thrive in a society where they are supported.

Although April is known for Autism awareness and acceptance, many steps can be taken to continue supporting individuals with ASD. Special needs planning is one way to help protect and improve the quality of life of family members with ASD. At Littman Krooks LLP we can help your loved ones plan for their future.
